Last week a person at GameFAQs, tmcw, made known that he'd discovered that in some cases GD-ROM laser problems are nothing more than a symptom of a problem with the power supply circuit board. According to tmcw's posting, a problem, most likely a failed component, causes the voltage being output to the GD-ROM drive to drop to a much lower voltage than what it's suppossed to be. This problem is believed to be the cause a number of different symptoms including; "laser needing to be recalibrated", "insufficient speed from the drive motor", "burned-out laser", etc...
At this time the power circuit board problem is being looked into. It's advised that if you're experiencing GD-ROM and/or laser problems that you not attempt to recalibrate the laser as this will only compound things should the power supply be your root problem.
